Offline, a few folks have asked why I have a blog and what do I do besides this blog. So, for those that are interested, here's a brief synopsis of the why and the what.
Why
I am a passionate educator dedicated to making science in and out of classrooms everywhere engaging, safe and positive learning environment. In my opinion, science is being lost in the focus on literacy and numeracy. Policy and decision makers at all levels of government are relegating science in our schools to an elective and not providing funding and professional development opportunities for teachers to remain current in both the content and pedagogical requirements around science teaching. Literacy and numeracy provide a foundation, but if you want innovation, you need science. And right now, there are limited numbers of advocates for science education.
Let's change that.
And when I'm not doing that, my three boys and I are out exploring this amazing world. Skiing, biking, hiking, camping, geocaching or just hanging out around the house. We are fortunate to live on the West Coast of Canada in Victoria with so many outdoor adventures to explore.
What
To that end, I aim to be part of that change. Currently working in the area of developing resources and supporting teachers implement those resources, I welcome any conversation or opportunity to explore strategies of engaging kids and teachers in the learning of science.
